CHAMPS Overview
A mentor is an adult who, along with parents, provides young people with support, counsel, friendship, reinforcement, and constructive example. Mentors are good listeners, people who care, people who want to help young people bring out strengths that are already there. National Mentoring Partnership CHAMPS Definition
young people through friendship and example along with the power and support of the Christian Community.”
CHAMPS is in the business of creating partnerships with churches and schools, teachers, families, community organizations and other government agencies: • To provide adult mentors from the faith community for young people, in the schools of the South Kitsap area, interested in mentoring. • To recruit, screen, train, and connect Christian adults with these students. • To begin the mentoring process at the grade school level and have the adult/youth relationship be maintained through high school. CHAMPS mentors are willing to begin a mentoring relationship at any age that is requested. • To use mentoring as an avenue to build character and life skills in the lives of SK young people in line with the goals of the Development Assets program. The CHAMPS approach to mentoring and positive youth development is based on the Search Institute's Developmental Asset framework. Developmental Assets are 40 essential building blocks for the development of caring and responsible adults. These assets were established through research done with over 200,000 youth across the nation. Both the public and private sectors of our community have embraced this way of looking at youth development. Public schools, non profit social service agencies, faith communities and county government are committed to building assets in youth using this framework. Developmental Assets clearly show that there is a need to build good character and practical life skills in young people through broad-based community participation. This approach is an affirmation that we need each other to support the next generation --including those in education, law enforcement, youth organizations, and the business and faith community. You can get more informational on Developmental Asset by going to www.searchinstitute.com
CHAMPS focuses on the following Developmental Asset areas: (Information on the 40 Developmental Assets is available via this link) 1) The need for other adults as role models: Assets 3 and 14 speak of a young person’s need for adults, other than parents, that can be both a support and a role model for responsible behavior. 2) The need for a religious community: Asset 19 details the need for young people to be a part of a religious community. CHAMPS mentors provide that link to a church of their choice. 3) The need for character in the areas of caring, integrity, honesty, responsibility, and the resolution of conflict: Assets 26, 28, 29, 30, and 36 speak to the need of these positive personal values. As a faith community, CHAMPS mentors place a high priority on character and have the background and experience to teach it to the next generation. 4) The need for self-esteem, sense of purpose and a positive view of the future: Assets 38, 39 and 40. CHAMPS mentors offer a world view that highlights their unique human design and provides hope for the future. In partnership with area schools, teachers, families, churches, and government agencies, CHAMPS will target young people that have a low number of Developmental Assets to encourage the full growth of their God-given potentials. CHAMPS mentors are uniquely positioned to contribute to the goals and outcomes of the Developmental Assets program because of our access to quality mentors who share its perspective. The idea of faith-based organizations working in partnership with community schools, government agencies, and other community organization has been sanctioned and given approval by the US Congress and Federal funding through the Department of Justice to do the very things that CHAMPS has purposed to do. Mentoryouth.com is a national faith-based organization funded by Federal Grant through the Department of Justice. Mentoryouth.com is one of the resources used by CHAMPS.
